World Contact Day

Today is World Contact Day!

In March 1953 an organization known as the "International Flying Saucer Bureau" sent a bulletin to all its members urging them to participate in an experiment termed "World Contact Day" on the 15th of March whereby, at a predetermined time, they would attempt to collectively send out a telepathic message to visitors from outer space. The message began with the words..."Calling occupants of interplanetary craft!"

"Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft!" is a song by prog rock group Klaatu, but the by far more well known version is by The Carpenters, recorded in 1977.

The song is subtitled "The Recognised Anthem of World Contact Day" - but its not really.

This song blew me away when I was a kid, just as my mind was blown apart by "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" that same year...
