Today I was delighted to meet up with my friend, social care provocateur and social media queen Shirley Ayres, to discuss, among other things her ClickGuide to Digital Technology in Social Care.
Whether you work in the public, private or not-for-profit sectors (or are a carer or use services), digital technology is transforming the way care services are delivered. It will not, of course, ever replace human contact, kindness, empathy and understanding. But it does allow people to connect in different ways, quickly and easily. Digital technology and social networks provide some of the most powerful tools available today for building a sense of belonging, support and sharing among groups of people who share similar interests and concerns.
The Click Guide to Digital Technology for Adult Social Care has been developed to help professionals, carers and service users make use of the fantastic resources which are already available across the whole spectrum of needs in adult social care today. We believe it is important to bring all of this information together in a single place. The Guide lists more than a hundred resources, spanning the areas of care, health and housing.
The Click Guide to Digital Technology for Adult Social Care can be downloaded instantly as an eBook at a cost of £3-99 or ordered as a hard copy printed publication.
Mindings in the ClickGuide
Mindings uses technology and social media to enable people to send personal captioned photos. text messages and calendar reminders to a digital display instantly from a mobile phone. This is especially important when families are widely dispersed and want an easy way of keeping in touch and connected whether they are living at home, in residential care, in hospital or in different parts of the world. Mindings is currently being piloted in the Australian outback.

Disruptive Social Care Podcast
I met Shirley in May 2012 and we became fast friends. I overheard Shirley say that she would love her own radio show, and I mentioned that as a multimedia producer I had experience in producing podcasts. An idea was hatched there and then, and one month later the first Disruptive Social Care Podcast aired. The show ran from June 2012 to September 2013, discussing the world of social care, in our own unique outspoken style. The venture was self-funded, but we managed to crowd-funding the final four episodes. We were hugely proud of the show, and as well as attracting thousands of individual listens from social care thought leaders, we also attracted some very high-profile guests, including:
Andrea Sutcliffe, CEO, Social Care Institute for Excellence
Dominic Campbell, Founder, FutureGov
Helen Keegan, Writer and Mobile Media Specialist
Paul Burstow, MP (former Minister of State for the Department of Health)
Paul Taylor, Innovation Coach, Bromford Group
Paul Hodgkin, CEO, Patient Opinion
Martyn Sibley, Entrepreneur and co-founder of Disability Horizons
DSCP’s Stuart Arnott and Shirley Ayes, with guest Dominic Campbell, Founder of FutureGov
